New Paintings of Paris, Fashion, Flowers and the New York Skyline…. Having done my vacationing earlier in the summer, I took advantage of that quiet period in August, when most sensible New Yorkers leave town. It was a gift to have uninterrupted time in the studio to work on new paintings. Paris That feeling of coolness in the midst […]
From my sketchbook….. some inspiring looks from Fall/Winter Fashion Week 2016 in New York, Milan and Paris. An aqua blue dress by Carolina Herrera with a Jazz-Age feel. (Painted with PanPastels & available as a fine art print.) Alessandro Michele’s whimsical technicolor designs for Gucci. Karl Lagerfeld’s always-inventive variations on the classic Chanel suit.
This red evening dress painting (made with PanPastels on charcoal paper) was inspired by a gown from Giambattista Valli’s dreamy collection for Couture Fashion Week 2016. His designs were inspired by Parisian gardens: the Parc de Bagatelle, the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Palais-Royal and the Jardin des Tuileries.
Holiday Greetings from NYC! This festive red PanPastel sketch was made at the Society of Illustrators’ Sketch Night – a fantastic place to draw, particularly if you are interested in fashion. This is my last post of the year before taking a much-needed vacation. I wish you all a happy, healthy and inspiring holiday season!
This watercolor painting was inspired by a coral evening dress from Alessandro Michele’s ethereal Spring/Summer 2016 collection for Gucci at Milan Fashion Week.
For the last day of summer….. a sun-dappled garden party painting, created digitally on my iPad.
This watercolor fashion painting was inspired by the dreamy Tadashi Shoji Spring/Summer 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week (NYFW).
Inspiration is everywhere. I painted this watercolor a few weeks ago. It’s based on a sketch I made at the Society of Illustrators here in NYC. The model’s dress was pale yellow (I recall), but as you can see, my nail color that day apparently influenced my paint palette. In any case, I named this painting, “The Lavender Dress.” And here is the lavender […]
I recently visited the “China Through the Looking Glass” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here in NYC. It’s a bit of a multi-media extravaganza, but nevertheless a feast for the eyes. The show is a collaboration between the Met’s Costume Institute and Department of Asian Art. High fashion is on display next to traditional Chinese costume, decorative arts, […]
The other night I attended the New York Society of Illustrators sketch night – a live fashion drawing event where all the poses were limited to 7 minutes or less. Most model drawing classes are run in a similar way, with very short poses leading up to longer poses. As I quickly made my fashion sketches, I was reminded of what a pleasure it is […]
Have you noticed lately that stylish women “of a certain age” have become trendy? Photographer Ari Seth Cohen’s blog and documentary, Advanced Style, about fabulously fashionable older people (mostly women) has legions of fans – myself included. Writer Joan Didion is modeling for Celine. The other day I saw “Iris,” the new documentary about Iris Apfel, the 93-year-old style icon, by the late, […]
The NYC Easter Parade & Easter Bonnet Festival is one of those eccentric “only-in-New-York” events that makes me grateful to live here. Unlike many parades, where the floats are the focus, the Easter parade is all about the people who dress to be seen and wear THE most fabulous bonnets – many made by hand. Their dogs dress up too! […]
They’re predicting 2-4 inches of snow today in NYC! Not a good sign for the first day of spring. Fortunately art provides the perfect escape from reality. In the spirit of spring, here is a new digital fashion painting in shades of peach and mint green. It is for sale as a print in my shop.
This week the top American fashion designers showed off their Fall 2015 collections at New York Fashion Week. One of the designers who always inspires me is Christian Siriano. This impressionist style digital painting was inspired by a gorgeous red petal gown from his latest collection.
Like so many people these days, my day-to-day calendar is electronic – but I haven’t given up on paper. I still enjoy keeping an annual wall calendar by my desk. Visualizing the year at a glance helps me keep things in perspective. If the calendar is beautiful…so much the better. With this in mind, I’ve […]
With spring blossoms in full force, I was inspired to make this watercolor fashion painting with a background pattern of poppies. I painted the figure and the floral background on separate sheets of paper, then combined them in Photoshop. This painting is for sale as framed or canvas prints in my shop.
International Shades, a company that makes high-end, couture lampshades, recently contacted me about using one of my fashion art images for their marketing campaign. Lampshades and fashion might not seem like an obvious combination, but when you see their whimsical and sophisticated designs, it makes perfect sense. Here’s their ecard announcement for an upcoming trade […]
Last month the Italian fashion magazine, Flair, published one of my iPad fashion paintings, inspired by Raf Simon’s Fall 2012 collection for Christian Dior Couture, in an article written by Suzy Menkes, the fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune.
I painted this red evening shoe several times before coming up with just the right shade of green to enhance the mid-century vintage feel of the design. This is one of a series of watercolor shoe paintings for sale in my print shop.
I love the dramatic swoop of the feather on these black evening shoes. In this watercolor painting I chose a dark purple background to enhance the sense of drama. Custom framed and canvas prints of this painting as well as other shoe art prints are available in my print shop.
