“One can’t paint New York as it is, but rather how it felt.” – Georgia O’Keeffe.
In my latest New York nocturne painting, I wanted to pay tribute to one of my favorite painters of New York City: Georgia O’Keeffe. Yes, THAT Georgia O’Keeffe! I realize when most people think of O’Keeffe they think only of her gorgeous flowers and landscapes of the American Southwest. That’s too bad, because her New York cityscapes, done early in her career, were masterpieces (IMHO) and rarely receive the attention they deserve. A classic O’Keeffe cityscape is her 1927 “Radiator Building – Night, New York.”
The building depicted in O’Keeffe’s painting is the 1924 Gothic art-deco American Radiator Building, which overlooks Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan. It is now the Bryant Park Hotel. I walk past the Radiator Building regularly and am always surprised it’s not one of those buildings people photograph all the time. Then I tried to photograph it myself. Oh my! It’s difficult to get a good shot through the trees in the park. O’Keeffe must have been painting from a perch inside one of the skyscrapers across the park. Unfortunately I did not have access to that perspective, but I imagined this view to create this digital painting. It’s available as a print in my online shop.
